Point Leo SLSC requires more Active members and also requires those Active members to obtain more SLSA qualifications. The basic requirements around fulfilling our patrol functions are becoming increasingly more complex over time and we need to ensure every patrol has a full suite of qualifications to ensure we provide the highest possible care and safety for ourselves and the public.
Club Members have the opportunity to achieve a selection of awards and competencies through the volunteer training system. These are delivered by our club volunteer trainers and assessors and are categorised as follows:
- Aquatic Rescue
- First Aid and Emergency Care
- Powercraft
- Statewide Services
Point Leo SLSC partner with Life Saving Victoria (LSV), which is a registered training organisation (RTO 21799) regulated by the Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA), to deliver vocational education and training services. We are recognised as a provider of quality assured and nationally accredited qualifications. Our Trainers, Assessors and Facilitators are a dedicated and committed group of volunteer members who make a huge contribution to lifesaving. These individuals go above and beyond to ensure LSV’s volunteer members have the knowledge, skills and rescue capabilities to provide safe beach environments for Victorian communities and visitors. Point Leo SLSC offers a range of course delivery options to ensure flexible training delivery. Whilst we have a choice of delivery mode for select courses, the minimum hours for face-to face training must be met. Some courses also have prerequisites, (including other courses to be completed) fitness or age requirements.

- Bronze Medallion (BM)
- Bronze Medallion Bridging Course (for current Surf Rescue Certificate holders)

Powercraft Courses
Powercraft courses available include:
- Side-by-side Vehicle Operator
- Inflatable Rescue Boat Crew
- Inflatable Rescue Boat Driver
Health Unit Courses
Health Unit courses are accredited units of Competency and include:
- Resuscitation (HLTAID009 – Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation)
- First Aid (HLTAID011 – Provide First Aid)
- Advanced Resuscitation Techniques (HLTAID015 – Provide Advanced Resuscitation Techniques and Oxygen Therapy)
- Advanced Resuscitation Techniques & First Aid (Combined Course) (HLTAID011 – Provide First Aid) and (HLTAID015 – Provide Advanced Resuscitation Techniques and Oxygen Therapy)
Statewide Services
Statewide Services courses are delivered by LSV staff and include:
- Training Officer Certificate BSBCMM411 – Make presentations and TAEDEL301 – Provide work skill instruction
- Rescue Watercraft Operator
- Pain Management

Skills Maintenance
For base awards like the Surf Rescue Certificate and Bronze Medallion you MUST attend an annual ‘re-test’ by 31 December each year for these awards to remain current. This keeps your knowledge fresh, and ensures you are aware of any changes – for example, introduction of new signals, or refinement of first aid procedures.
Awards such as IRBC, IRBD, ARTC are also retested annually – if you don’t complete your annual skills maintenance, you cannot operate the equipment relevant to each award or participate in certain activities.
Skills Maintenance dates for each season will be advised to members in our weekly Club Notices closer to the dates.
Lifesavers With Pride (LWP) have a ‘Proud Beaches Scholarship’ which can be accessed here:
https://www.lifesaverswithpride.com.au/scholarship. The Proud Beaches Scholarship enables LGBTIQ people around Australia to overcome the financial cost involved in training to become a lifesaver. LWP will reimburse course costs. Anyone over the age of 13 can apply for the scholarship (the BM is only available to those over 15yo with Surf Rescue Certificates (SRC) available from 13), and LWP do not discriminate between gender, culture or physical ability.
